Statement on the Ford Government’s Attack on Students

OTTAWA — The Carleton University New Democrats join students and advocacy groups from across Ontario in denouncing the Ford government’s malicious and anti-democratic attack on students. While New Democrats believe that lower tuition benefits students, pairing a 10% reduction with an elimination of free education for low-income students as well as the post-graduation interest-free grace period makes no fiscal, moral, or logical sense.
Furthermore, in a blatant show of hypocrisy given Ford’s promise of extensive consultation, these cuts were executed with absolutely no consultation whatsoever of democratically elected student groups or institutions, whose ability to collectively bargain for low tuition has also been put in jeopardy. Instead, the Ford government has opted to listen to fringe voices that have deeply ideological motivations for supporting these devastating cuts.
We encourage everyone that opposes these cuts to make your voice heard by calling or emailing Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Merrilee Fullerton, Premier Doug Ford, and your local MPP and sharing how these cuts will affect you and essential student services on campus.
