The coalition was followed by the social democratic Nepali Congress, which won 118 local units, and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), which claimed victory in 38 local units.
In the first phase of municipal polls, held on May 14, the CPN-UML also won a majority of votes.
“The elections results show the success of the party’s central command,” political analyst Puranjan Acharya told the Kathmandu Post.
The CPN-UML’s “clever selection” of candidates also worked well in Tharu- and Madhesi-dominant constituencies, Acharya added.
Local elections were held in the Himalayan nation for the first time since 1997, marking an attempt by the government to restore democracy after a long-running Maoist uprising followed by a year-long delay in passing a new constitution.
"This election will empower local bodies and open the floodgate of social and economic prosperity," Nepali President Bidya Devi Bhandari said in a statement.
The first round of elections were held in three of Nepal's seven provinces, with a voter turnout of more than 70 percent. Three other provinces held elections last Wednesday. The final round is set for September 18 in the last province.
