AKEL meets CTP (Republican Turkish Party)
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th November 2019, Nicosia
On the eve of the important 25th November trilateral meeting in Berlin, we had a meeting today with a delegation from the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party headed by its President Tufan Erhurman.
We expressed our common concern for the prolonged deadlock created after the failure of the negotiations at Crans Montana. We concluded together that this stalemate, the prolonged deadlock, complicates even more the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis.
Furthermore, it is our joint wish that this trilateral meeting will yield positive results. We call on the two leaders to come to the meeting with the political will to work together and to overcome any problems so that we can have positive results.
Our wish is that this meeting should lead to the convening of a five-party conference, where the terms of reference will be adopted that include the UN Secretary General’s framework, the convergences recorded so far, and, of course, these terms of reference will be based on the relevant UN resolutions and High-Level Agreements.
It is our conviction that at the point where we are today it doesn’t take long if the political will is demonstrated to arrive at an agreement on the six points the UN Secretary-General had concluded at Crans Montana.
We have agreed that after the trilateral meeting in Berlin we shall meet again, jointly evaluate the results of the trilateral meeting and agree on actions that will aim to contribute to the promotion and solution of the Cyprus problem.
I would like to thank my friend Toufan for the very fruitful discussion we have had and say that it is our obligation, of both political parties, that it is our patriotic duty to work to ensure that we shall lead Cyprus to reunification and our people to live together in conditions of peace, in conditions of progress that will bring prosperity to all of us.
