Dear Compatriots,
Following the announcement of the intensification and expansion of the inhumane sanctions of the US against Iran and the inclusion of Iran’sIslamic Revolution GuardCorps (IRGC) in the list of foreign terrorist organizations by the US administration, the advocates of peace and progressive forces across the world have witnessed in recent days a very worrying rise of tensions between the racist, pseudo-fascist, andreactionary Trump administration and the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
On the one hand, the military mobilization in the Persian Gulf by the Trump administration, which politically represents the Military and Oil monopolies in the United States that haveprofited over hundreds of billions of dollars in the past decades from the war and the destruction of the Middle Eastern countries, including Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and Yemen, along with the threatening statements issued by other high officials of the US administration and their allies in the region such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and the racist state of Israel, and on the other hand, the adventurous threats and impulsive slogans of the Islamic regime's leaders, including the IRGC’srhetoric about closing the Strait of Hormuz and similar threats, have created a situation in which the Persian Gulf and the Middle East region and our homeland now face serious and worrying threats of a military conflict and another war.
John Bolton, the National Security Adviser of the United States, reiterated in recent days that "in response to Iran's worrying behaviours," the US aircraft career "USS Abraham Lincoln" and several "B-52" bombers will be stationed in the area under the control of "CentCom" (American Central Command in the Middle East). According to Bolton, "the goal is to send a clear message to the Iranian regime that any attack on the interests of the United States or its allies will be met with unrelenting power."
Also, in the last two days, it was announced that in addition to the USS Abraham Lincoln, the US government had dispatched the USS Arlington warship along with Patriot anti-missile systems to the Persian Gulf region.According to the news agencies around the world, such a military mobilization of the US troops and military hardwar in the Middle East has been unprecedented in the past thirty years. The British government had also in March announced its surprise action of deploying 28 F-35 fighter jets, the most advanced version of this series of fighter jets, to its military base in Cyprus.
On Friday, May 10, the German-based press agency dpa, published a report from Washington on the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and wrote that "although the US government insists it has no plans to engage in a war with Iran, but the last days’ events have added significantly to tensions between the two countries. " According to the same report, Pompeoalso said that Iran should not interpret US hitherto self-restraint as an indication of lacking resolution."
Mike Pompeo's statements were based on the last week news that Trump's administrationhad announced that it would not extend the exemption of several countries from the sanctions on Iran’s oil purchases with the goal of completely shutting down Iran's oil exports. In response to this decision of the US government, Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Naval forces of the IRGC, argued that "if they deprive Iran from utilizing the Strait of Hormuz, we will block it, and in the event of any threat, we will not hesitate even a moment to protect and defend the Iranian waterway." Also, Mohammad Bagheri, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, said on Sunday April 28th that "If our oil does not cross the Strait, then surely the oil from other countries will not cross it either."
In response to this threat of the commanders of the IRGC and other regime leaders, Bahrain Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled Bin Ahmad Al-Khalifain an interview with Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper regarding the threat to block the Strait of Hormuz said: "This is a clear threat to the [Persian] Gulf States. Such an act is a dangerous escalation of tension, and Iran will not be allowedto do so, even for one day."
According to oil experts, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important international waterways through which about one-fifth of the world's crude oilpasses. As a result of the decrease inIranian oil exports and instability in the region, and the rise in crude oil prices in recent weeks, the importance of this Strait has increasedsignificantly, and closing or blocking it will cause more turbulence in the global energy market.
Following the recent tensions, and in response to the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal (JCPOA) and in protest to the inadequate action of other signatories of this agreement, the Iranian regime announced on Wednesday May 8ththat it had stopped some of its actions in the implementation of the deal.
In a statement issued by the National Security Council of Iran, the council stated that "in order to safeguard the security and national interests of the people of Iran and to exercise the Islamic Republic of Iran's rights set forth in paragraphs 26 and 36 [of the Agreement], today, May 8th, 2019, the order to stop certain actions of Iran per the agreement was issued." The statement said that this matter had been communicated to the leaders of the signatory states, including Germany, Britain, China, Russia, and France in a letter that President Hassan Rouhani had sent to them. The statement ofthe National Security Council of Iran is explaining Iran's reduced commitments and states that “the Islamic Republic of Iran at the current stage is no longer committed to complying with restrictions on maintaining only a certain inventory of the enriched uranium and heavy water."
This position of the Iranian government was faced with the rapid and negative reaction of the European Union, and many European politicians expressed concern about this decision of the Iranian government. In an assessment of this move by the Iranian government, Rolf Mutzenisch, an expert on foreign affairs of the German Social-Democratic Party, wrote: "Although the hardliners in Tehran failed to enforce their will on complete withdrawal of Iran from the JCPOA, but thisaction of Iran [limited withdrawal] will destabilize the region more than ever.”The Russian government has also said that, while understanding Iran's position, has called on Iran to postpone the implementation of its threat.
It is clear that the rise of these tensions to the extent that the smallest spark can lead to a military conflict and put the Persian Gulf in fire and blood cannot benefit the people of the region and especially the people of our homeland Iran who are involved in a vital struggle within the country againstthe reactionary and anti-people theocratic regime of Supreme Religious Leader. As the historical experience of the Iran-Iraq war shows, the only forces that benefit from such slogans as "War, War until Victory" and "War is a Blessing" are the reactionary forces and the grand mercantilecapitalistsand parasite dealers who reaped the benefits of the "blessings” of the devastating Iraq-Iran war that diverted the February 1979 revolution to a deadlock and paved the way for the establishment and consolidation of the brutaltheocratic regime of Velayat-e-Faqih [Supreme Religious Leader] and the complete failure of the revolution.
Today's reality is that warmongers on both sides of the world believe that war and military conflict can bring significant financial and political benefits for them. In the United States, the bankrupt and inhumane government of Trump and his advisers who are preparing for the 2020 election believe that a limited military engagement with the Iranian regime can have,by displaying the military power of the US military machine,a very positive effect inpleasing the nationalist, supremacists, and right-wing forces of the United States that make up Trump’s main social base, and will pave the way for his re-election. The regional allies of the Trump administration, including the reactionary and brutalregime of Ben-Salman [in Saudi Arabia], the US-backedstates in the Persian Gulf, and the racist government of Israel, are also demanding a US military strike against Iran to impose their regional domination and hegemony. As has been reported many times, the Saudi government has agreedto cover the cost of such a dangerous military adventure in the region.
In Iran, the theocratic regime is increasingly faced with a wide-range of political-economic crises. The escalation of the dire economic squeeze that pushed millions of our citizens to a life below the poverty line, inflation, the extreme devaluation of Iran’s currency Rial, the bankruptcy of many manufacturing units across the country, rising unemployment, and unprecedented corruption and oppression by the rulers, has overall created an explodingsituation in the country. The destructive and anti-national-interests policies of the ruling theocratic regime that have been set out and implemented to fulfill theinterests of the big mercantile, rentier, and parasite dealercapital, put the country's economy on the verge of a complete collapse. For the leaders of the theocratic regime of Iran the main objective is tosave and preserve the present political system, i.e.to safeguard theregime at all costs. The presumption that the positions and policies of the reactionary and anti-people leaders of the Islamistregime of Iranis in line with the national interests is a dangerous illusion that must be challenged and exposed to the fullest. The leaders of the Iran’s regime, as they have shown in the past, are prepared to do whatever it takes to maintain their "system"- ranging from offering "heroic flexibility" and even "drinking the cup of poison" [to abandon their stated policies and positions] justto stay in power for a little more while.
Dear Compatriots,
Contrary to all the claims of US leaders such as warmongers likeMike Pompeo, John Bolton, and Mike Pence, not only are the interventionist policies of the racist and pseudo-fascist government of Trump NOTin the interests of our nation, buttheir sole aim is to secure the undisputed domination and hegemony of the US imperialismand its allies in the region. The interference of the United States and other imperialist states in the Middle East in recent decades has only led to wars and the bloodsheds and destruction of many countries and nations of the region and should therefore be resisted and confrontedwith full power. The support of the monarchists and the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) for the policies of the Trump administration indicates more than everthe dependence and mercenary nature of these groups and the political illegitimacy of those who deem theircomingto political power possible only through inhumane sanctions and military strikeonIran by the Trump administration.
In our opinion, the most important task of all the peace-loving and progressive forces in the region is to join forces to prevent a dangerous and catastrophic military conflictthat could have terrible consequences for our homeland and nation and other nations in the Persian Gulf region.
Under the current circumstances, the struggle of the people and the progressive and patriotic forces of our country for peace is of particular importance and should be pursued with all rigor.
With the unity of action and expanding the popular struggle [of progressive and democratic forces], the ruling reactionary regime could and should be challenged, and the way for establishing freedom and social justice and implementing fundamental, sustainable, and democratic changes could be opened.
